Gratitude and Reflection: Embracing Winter’s Pause

Hello everyone reading the newsletter again and hello to new people who are just joining!

If you’re new here, this is the fourth of a bi-monthly newsletter walking alongside mine and Mika’s co-translation journey. We are entering the final stretch of co-translating Naoki Shiomi’s book 88 Concepts. In this newsletter we share book updates, excerpts we find interesting that we think you may enjoy and snippets from our reading sessions together.

I want to express immense gratitude to those of you with us so far for taking even a few minutes of your precious time and attention to accompany us on this co-translation journey. We welcome comments and questions below and also longer messages through the form on this site’s homepage.

I am in the midst of preparing a table of contents and sample book draft for the eight or so people that have so graciously offered to lightly edit and review sections of the draft.

It has been hugely affirming for me to receive all of the positive responses from the people I’ve asked to review the draft. The responses have given me a lot of faith that people do want to support the co-translation we are doing. I am thinking it may be interesting to introduce them and the work they are doing in a future newsletter, what do you think? 🙂

I had hoped to have finished the document by the beginning of December but didn’t realize what a mammoth task formatting would be. It is giving me the opportunity to do a first review and finally go through all of Mika’s first edits though. There is a first time for everything.

We are taking a pause for the winter break here in North America and until after the New Years break in Japan. Miki is on a two week Vipassana retreat in Kyōtō. We re-convene again for another two-three sessions afterwards before she leaves again for her first trip to India.

Enjoy the break if it’s something taking place in your corner of the world. If it’s not, not we wish you well during this time all the same. We also invite any celebrations, recognition and appreciations that you may have for us in the comments to help nourish and energize us in the work we are doing.

That’s all for now!
